Below, our CSO, Maggie Williams, shares her thoughts and reflections after UAV Tech Conference 2026…
“The most impactful conflicts of our time will not be fought with people.
That statement alone would spark debate among anyone who attended the UAV Technology Conference in Arlington, VA this week. I had the opportunity to attend and wanted to share a few key reflections.
If I had to distill one takeaway, it is this: the US Armed Forces and our NATO allies have meaningful catch-up to do in UAS technology. The speed at which international peers and near peers are fielding and deploying unmanned capabilities into real-world operations is sobering.
That said, there is a positive signal emerging.
We are seeing real momentum toward reshaping government acquisition. Industry and government are collaborating more closely, with a clear focus on getting the newest and most effective technology to the front line faster. There is also a growing push toward open, shared marketplaces for commercial off-the-shelf solutions, breaking down long-held barriers and accelerating adoption.
We live in an increasingly uncertain world, with global events accelerating weekly. While unmanned systems may be on the front lines, they still rely heavily on people. Today, operating a single Group 3 UAV can require a team of eight or more. Reducing that burden while increasing capability and speed is critical.
This is where autonomy becomes more than a buzzword. At Ainstein, we see how radar altimeters and advanced sensor technologies unlock additional layers of autonomy. Reliable, all-weather sensing enables lower flight, precise landings, operation in contested environments, and less human intervention, translating directly to faster deployment, fewer operators, and more resilient systems.
The conversations this week reinforced a simple truth: the future of defense will be defined not just by the platforms we build, but by how quickly we enable autonomy, adapt our processes, and get trusted technology into the field.”
