Choosing the Right Radar Altimeter for your UAV Mission

Ainstein’s Radar Altimeter Product Comparison

Drone and UAV systems have evolved rapidly over the past few decades. What began as niche technology has become essential hardware across commercial, industrial, and tactical markets.

Today, the next wave of UAV innovation is driven by clear demands: longer flight ranges, improved detection capabilities, lower production costs, faster manufacturing cycles, and the ability to operate safely in increasingly complex airspaces.

To meet these requirements, UAV OEMs must carefully evaluate their designs and the components that make up their systems, including reliable altitude sensing.

At Ainstein, we have kept these evolving needs in mind since releasing our first radar altimeter in 2017. Our team has conceptualized, designed, tested, refined, and manufactured a family of mmWave radar sensors with varying capabilities and specifications. The goal has always been simple: provide radar altimeters compatible with a wide range of UAV configurations and mission profiles.

As the UAV market continues to grow rapidly, this blog highlights the key advantages and ideal use cases of Ainstein’s radar altimeter lineup featured HERE on our Aerospace products page.

The Original Workhorse: US-D1

The US-D1 was Ainstein’s first radar altimeter and remains a proven solution for missions operating below 80 meters AGL.

As of 2026, the US-D1 has been deployed in more than 40 countries, supporting a wide variety of UAV applications. It is particularly well-suited for:

  • Smart agriculture operations
  • Short-range industrial missions (such as infrastructure cleaning)
  • Drone delivery platforms
  • Early-stage UAV concept development

One of the US-D1’s key advantages is reliable surface tracking below 50 meters, allowing drones to remain aware of terrain changes during low-altitude operations.

The sensor is lightweight and compact, weighing just 110 grams and measuring 108 × 79 × 20 mm, making integration simple even on smaller platforms.

For autopilot integration, the US-D1 includes built-in drivers for ArduPilot and PX4, with additional compatibility through DroneCAN, enabling straightforward deployment in many existing UAV architectures.

Ruggedized and Long-Range: LR-D1

While many UAV missions occur close to the ground, drone operations within challenging environments and higher altitudes, where longer-range sensing becomes critical, are growing.

To address these requirements, Ainstein expanded the capabilities of the original radar altimeter design and developed the LR-D1, extending the detection range to 500 meters.

The LR-D1 was designed for demanding flight conditions and has undergone extensive shock and vibration testing. The sensor has also been successfully flown at speeds up to 200 m/s, demonstrating its ability to deliver reliable altitude data even during aggressive maneuvers.

Despite its increased capability, the LR-D1 remains relatively lightweight at 315 grams, allowing integration into medium to large UAV systems.

The LR-D1 supports a wide variety of long-range UAV operations, including the following:

  • ISR operations
  • BVLOS missions
  • Cargo delivery
  • MALE systems

Like the US-D1, it supports straightforward integration and compatibility with commercial autopilot systems such as ArduPilot.

Dual-Band Precision: LR-D1 Pro

Accurate terrain awareness is critical for many UAV missions, especially during takeoff, landing, and low-altitude flight in complex environments.

To provide both long-range capability and high precision, Ainstein introduced the LR-D1 Pro, the first dual-band commercial radar altimeter of its kind.

By combining 24 GHz and 60 GHz radar technology, the LR-D1 Pro achieves centimeter-level precision for altitude measurements between 0.3 and 5 meters, while still supporting extended-range detection up  to 500 meters.

Another key advantage of the LR-D1 Pro is its flexible communication architecture. The sensor can operate using multiple protocols, including CAN, UART TTL, RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485.

Users can easily switch between these interfaces using Ainstein’s RadAlt GUI, enabling adaptation to a wide variety of UAV systems.

The LR-D1 Pro also features significantly improved ruggedization, capable of withstanding three times the vibration and five times the shock of the standard LR-D1.

The LR-D1 Pro radar altimeter has been deployed in demanding applications such as:

  • Precision VTOL systems
  • Aerial target platforms
  • Sea-skimming vehicles
  • MALE systems

A New Commercial Standard: US-D1 Pro

The US-D1 Pro is the newest addition to Ainstein’s radar altimeter portfolio and reflects nearly a decade of industry feedback and real-world deployment experience.

Since the original US-D1 launch in 2017, Ainstein has gathered insights from customers and integrators across global UAV markets. The US-D1 Pro was designed specifically to meet the next generation of commercial UAV requirements.

The sensor offers an extended measurement range of 0.5 to 120 meters AGL, while maintaining a compact footprint with dimensions of 101 × 76 × 24.71 mm and a weight of just 140 grams. This allows UAV designers to preserve valuable mass and volume budgets for mission payloads.

In response to increasing reliability expectations across the industry, the US-D1 Pro was also designed with reference to DO-160, DO-178, and DO-254 airworthiness standards.

The sensor provides significantly improved environmental protection, increasing ingress protection from IP67 (US-D1) to IP69K.

Additional system improvements—including enhanced testing tools, logic programming capabilities, and a confidence-level output—make the US-D1 Pro a flexible solution for a wide range of missions, including:

  • Geophysical surveying
  • Infrastructure inspection
  • Commercial drone operations
  • Ultralight urban air mobility (UAM) platforms

Conclusion

In conclusion, from compact short-range solutions to rugged long-range systems with centimeter-level precision, Ainstein’s radar altimeter portfolio is designed to support the evolving needs of the UAV industry.

By offering sensors optimized for different mission profiles, integrators can select the right radar altimeter to improve safety, reliability, and performance in modern aerial systems. Contact us at sales@ainstein.ai to learn more.
