Ainstein’s Aerospace team just came back from the 2025 Commercial UAV Expo, and one theme especially stood out across conversations with UAV manufacturers and operators: the industry is rapidly evolving toward safer, more capable, and regulation-ready flight. From obstacle avoidance to radar altimeters, the conversations highlighted both the challenges companies face today and the opportunities radar technology can unlock tomorrow.

Obstacle Avoidance: Growing Demand Across UAVs

Obstacle avoidance continues to rise as a top priority for UAV manufacturers, especially with BVLOS operations moving closer to regulatory approval. Many companies shared that their current sensing solutions are not meeting expectations—whether due to environmental limitations or inconsistent performance. Radar drew strong interest as a reliable alternative, with several noting they would integrate or even replace their current systems if a compact radar solution were available.

Spotlight on the US-D1 Pro

The US-D1 Pro captured significant attention at the show. Building on the trusted foundation of the US-D1, the Pro offers extended range in the same compact form factor. This balance between performance and size is proving to be exactly what many UAV manufacturers are searching for. Aurelia, a current US-D1 user, expressed interest in upgrading to the Pro for greater capability. Other companies saw the US-D1 Pro as a compelling fit for applications where extended range is necessary without adding bulk or complexity.

This reinforces that there is a market segment actively seeking radar solutions that offer advanced performance in a practical package.

BVLOS and Part 108: The Next Frontier

With Part 108 regulations approaching, BVLOS flight remains top of mind across the UAV industry. For drone delivery, logistics, and large-scale UAV operations, safe and legal certification depends on reliable sensing solutions. Radar-based obstacle avoidance and precision altimetry will be critical in helping companies achieve BVLOS readiness and stay ahead of evolving standards.

Companies such as Camflite, Aspira, Aurelia, Skyfront, Inspired Flight, and Central UAS Technologies all shared valuable perspectives on how radar can strengthen UAV performance and enable new applications.
