OVERVIEW
In mission-critical search and rescue (SAR) operations, speed and accuracy are critical for locating missing persons and responding to emergencies. Drones equipped with Ainstein’s US-D1 radar altimeter provide precise altitude control, enabling autonomous terrain-following and improved data collection in challenging environments.
The Challenge
Search and rescue teams often operate in unpredictable environments where maintaining consistent drone altitude is essential for efficient and safe operations. However, SAR missions present several challenges:
- Difficult Terrain: Mountainous, forested, or disaster-stricken areas require drones to follow variable terrain while maintaining optimal altitude for data capture.
- Limited Visibility and Harsh Conditions: SAR operations often occur in low-visibility environments, where accurate altitude control becomes critical for avoiding obstacles.
- Time-Sensitive Operations: Rapid response is essential in life-threatening situations, and any delay caused by altitude errors can reduce the chances of success.
The Solution
Ainstein’s US-D1 radar altimeter gives precise, real-time altitude data in all weather, letting drones keep a constant height above ground, even in complex terrain. This is critical for search and rescue missions where terrain-following and obstacle avoidance are key to success. With Ainstein’s radar altimeters, SAR teams search faster, safer, and more effectively in difficult environments, improving outcomes in life-saving operations.
Use Case ScenarioÂ
In the aftermath of a natural disaster, a search and rescue team deploys drones equipped with Ainstein’s US-D1 radar altimeter to locate survivors trapped in remote or inaccessible areas. The drones:
- Automatically adjust altitude while navigating uneven terrain in mountainous regions.
- Use thermal imaging and high-resolution cameras to detect heat signatures from potential survivors.
- Cover vast search areas in a fraction of the time compared to ground-based search efforts.
- Provide real-time data to command centers for rapid decision-making and deployment of rescue teams.
Â
Who the US-D1 is Ideal for:
- Mid-to-large-sized organizations with fleets that conduct SAR flights
- Those who need accuracy in all weather conditions & diverse environments
- Surveyors operating at constant AGL altitudes with multiple obstacles below them
Â
Why Use a Radar Altimeter?
- To reliably maintain a constant altitude over varying terrain
- Keep the aircraft safe throughout the flight from irregular changes in the terrain
- GPS and barometers can’t account for AGL altitude and elements in the environment (trees, buildings, etc.)
- Navigation in GPS-denied areas
Â
How the US-D1 Works on Your SAR Mission:
- The US-D1 is shipped with either a Molex 4POS 2.54MM or JST_GHR-04V-S connector, which easily connects to the serial port of the UAV’s flight controller.
- Mount the radar on the underside of the UAV frame, where it has a clear field of view. Thanks to its compact size, it is possible to be integrated into the landing gear or frame of the drone or UAV with ease.
- Change parameters in Ardupilot or PX4 software according to the setup guides and reboot the flight controller. The sensor is ready for operation on the delivery drone.Â
- Plan the flight plant to the destination of the SAR mission.
- Begin the flight and watch the UAS maintain itself safely by detecting the closest obstacle in its FOV, ensuring to make adjustments as it follows terrain and other obstacles in various environments
Â
Key Benefits of the US-D1 for SAR Missions:
- The US-D1 Radar Altimeter has a larger FOV compared to LiDAR/laser altimeters to capture small obstacles
- IP67-rated and able to endure harsh conditionsÂ
- Capture the closest distance between the RadAlt and obstacles in the FOV for safety and accuracy
- Terrain-Adaptive Flight Control: By maintaining precise altitude over varying terrain, Ainstein’s radar altimeters ensure drones can cover rugged landscapes efficiently without risking collision or data inaccuracies.
- Improved Object Detection and Avoidance: Consistent altitude control enhances the performance of onboard cameras, LiDAR, and thermal sensors, improving the detection of heat signatures or visual cues during SAR operations.
- Enhanced Safety in Hazardous Conditions: Accurate altitude measurements allow drones to operate safely in adverse weather, low-visibility environments, and cluttered areas, reducing operational risks.
- Faster and More Effective Search Coverage: By enabling precise terrain following, drones can optimize search patterns, reducing gaps in coverage and increasing the likelihood of locating missing persons quickly.
