US-D1 in Industrial Drone Ops for Power Line Inspection

OVERVIEW

Throughout the years, cities and urban areas keep growing, and they remain to be maintained under the same standards as when they covered less area. Fortunately, drones have continued to evolve as well, and have become useful tools in sectors such as inspections. Drone operators can inspect more efficiently and faster power lines, but there are challenges in the process. Currently, the detection of obstacles in the path of the drone is perceived through the operator’s vision or onboard visual sensors, but this is subject to complications.

Key Benefits of the US-D1 for Data Collection:

  • The US-D1 Radar Altimeter has a larger FOV compared to LiDAR/laser altimeters to capture small obstacles
  • IP67-rated and able to endure harsh conditions
  • Capture the closest distance between the RadAlt and obstacles in the FOV for safety and accuracy

Who the US-D1 is Ideal for:

  • Mid-to-large-sized inspection fleets that conduct constant flights to power lines
  • Those who need accuracy in all weather conditions & diverse environments
  • Surveyors operating at constant AGL altitudes with multiple obstacles bellow them

Why Use a Radar Altimeter?

  • To reliably maintain constant altitude over varying terrain
  • Keep the aircraft safe throughout the flight from irregular changes in the terrain
  • GPS and barometers can’t account for AGL altitude and elements in the environment (trees, buildings, etc.)

How the US-D1 Works on Your Inspection Mission:

  • The US-D1 is shipped with either a Molex 4POS 2.54MM or JST_GHR-04V-S connector, which easily connects to the serial port of the UAV’s flight controller.
  • Mount the radar on the underside of the UAV frame, where it has a clear field of view. Thanks to its compact size, it is possible to be integrated into the landing gear or frame of the drone or UAV with ease.
  • Change parameters in Ardupilot or PX4 software according to the setup guides and reboot the flight controller. The sensor is ready for operation on the delivery drone.
  • Plan the flight plant to the destination of the inspection.
  • Begin the flight and watch the UAS maintain itself safely by detecting the closest obstacle in its FOV, ensuring to make adjustments as it flies close to the power lines to remain compliant with local flight laws.
